Often times, car buying comes down to decisions. Safety features, technology, and price, among a list of many other things, can often help your decision when it comes to the vehicle you choose. There are also cars that are the same brand but different models, and that can also be confusing. The Ford Edge and the Ford Escape are two of the cars we are often asked about what the major differences are. While they look somewhat similar and may have similar features, there are differences that can help you decide when it comes to your car buying needs.
The Ford Escape was introduced in the 2001 model year as a fresh idea to the SUV, while the Ford Edge came around in the 2007 model year as another option Ford had for an SUV. They are often compared because of not only their similar look, but the fact they are two SUV’s made by Ford that are a 5-passenger ride.
The Ford Escape was redesigned this car model year for 2020 while the last revamp of the Ford Edge was in 2015 with a slight update in 2019. They both offer similar trim levels, but the Ford Edge offers more space than its brother the Ford Escape.
On the outside, the Escape has the signature trapezoid grille while the Edge has a sportier vibe and more muscular look than the Escape does. The Edge is slightly wider and bigger than the Escape in all dimensions. They also both rate the same in terms of safety testing and features. The Ford Edge is equipped with more power in it’s top trim levels due to the revamp while the Ford Escape is a close second. In regards to safety, there are a variety of features available on both models. These are standard on the Ford Edge while optional on the Escape models. Some of the features included are adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and rain sensing windshield wipers. New to 2019, the Ford Edge has the capability of bringing itself to an automatic stop in case of emergency.
Inside is where the biggest differences lie with the Ford Escape and Ford Edge. Each trim level of the Escape comes with an LCD screen as the center but depending on the trim level it can be bigger in some than others. The Edge has a simpler interior design, which many find appealing. The Escape Titanium models offer leather seats while the Edge ST has leather seats with micro suede accents. The Edge offers more room in the cargo as well as the interior.
The Ford Escape can come has a four-wheel drive car in almost all trim levels while the Ford Edge doesn’t have that option unless it’s the top trim level.
In terms of technology, the Ford Escape offers a foot activated tailgate, electronic parking break, keyless entry, a sunroof, heated seats with heated steering wheels, and xenon LED headlights. The Ford Edge has all of that and more. Ventilated front and rear seats, paddle shifters, a higher performance break package, and a multi-level traction control system are also available.
Both the Edge and the Escape come with the third generation of Ford’s Infotainment system, Sync 3.0. Sync 3.0 offers Apple CarPlay and has Android Auto combability. It is standard on certain trim levels on both of the Ford Escape and Ford Edge vehicles.
