The Ford Maverick used to be a small car produced in the 1970s, not a truck by today’s standards. It wasn’t fast and it only lasted 7 years from 1970-1977. But the Maverick name is back and it’s about as far away from a small sedan as possible. The new 2023 Ford Maverick is a pickup truck and a hybrid one on top of it. Why did Ford revive the Maverick name for a truck instead of a sedan and what are the biggest differences between the 1970’s Ford Maverick and the pickup truck of today?

We aren’t lying even though most people find it hard to believe; there was a Ford Maverick compact car that was a two-door sedan that eventually became a four-door car. The Maverick name comes from Samuel Augustus Maverick, a Texas pioneer, that didn’t allow his cattle to be branded. At the time, a brand meant proof of ownership. Ford adopted the Maverick name to show similar independence that you can own something but still let it be free.

It makes a lot of sense that Ford would want to revive the Maverick name. Even though sales of the OG Maverick may have been just alright, there still is a strong connection to it today. Ford, along with many other car companies, bring back old car names to connect with today’s society for a sense of nostalgia.

The original Ford Maverick came with a 170 cubic inch straight-six engine that made it get 22 mpg and sold nearly 129,000 models its first year. The OG colors were pretty awesome too, including Anti-Establish Mint, Hulla Blue, Original Cinnamon, Freudian Gilt, Thanks Vermillion, and Meadowlark Yellow. Pretty creative if you ask us. The Maverick was eventually replaced by the Ford Fairmont.

The new Ford Maverick is incredibly popular, even though it’s only been out since the year 2022. It has a hybrid powertrain and makes up to 250 hp. Unlike the Maverick car, the new Maverick truck has a hybrid powertrain.

The 2022 Ford Maverick is so much different from the original car and the sales have far exceeded the OG car already. So much so, that Ford has order banks because they cannot keep up with its production demand.

With its hybrid powertrain, the new Maverick has a unique advantage over the old Maverick car and as Bob Dylan says, “the times they are a changin’”. The fact that it is a far more affordable truck compared to the F Series, it only helps secure its place as the more successful Ford Maverick.
