Ford Ranger is truck name that has been used on many model lines of trucks sold by Ford. The name has been used for specific models of vehicles worldwide since the early 80’s in compact and mid-size pickup trucks category.

The Ford Ranger was introduced as a compact pickup sold in North America starting in the 1983 model year.  Between 1998 and 2011, the Ranger name was also used for models that were developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market

In the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America again. It is currently right below the F-150 and above the Maverick in the pickup truck range.

Prior to its use on compact pickup trucks, Ford used the name Ranger on three different models. The Edsel was the first to use the name, with the Edsel Ranger introduced in 1958. The model line name lasted through the 1960 demise of the Edsel brand though.

In 1965, the Ranger name returned to use by Ford as a trim package for F-Series trucks, one of which used to be the Ford Bronco. Following 1981, the Ranger trim line was moved in anticipation of its 1983 model year compact pickup truck, which was introduced in early 1982. The first compact pickup truck designed by Ford, the Ford Ranger replaced the Mazda-produced Ford Courier. Across three generations, it was produced using a single chassis architecture. The model line was marketed from 1983 to the 2012 model years.

The light-truck chassis architecture served as the basis for a wide range of vehicles over the Ford Ranger’s production. Along with sharing body and powertrain components with the Bronco and the Ford Explorer SUVs, the Ranger also shared components with the Ford Aerostar minivan.

While it was among the highest-selling vehicles in the compact segment for nearly its 30-year production, an overall decline in demand for compact trucks led to its discontinuation after the 2011 model year.

But, for the 2019 model year, the Ranger returned to its model range, just a step below the Ford F-Series. The first generation of the new line is sold as a mid-size pickup truck. The current generation of the Ranger is offered in two configurations on a 127-inch wheelbase, including a 2+2 door SuperCab and a 4-door SuperCrew.
