Now that the gap between orders for the Ford Bronco is gone, there is no doubt that Bronco owners are going to want to add fun things to the Bronco for off roading and everyday use. The Bronco was designed to readily have itself be moded; and Ford made it so that the base-level Bronco could be a blank canvas for aftermarket upgrades. This means that a number of Broncos will get the aftermarket treatment and can be uniquely their own.
Of all the potential off-road things that can be added (and there are quite a few) here are three of the most popular upgrades and the advantages they offer.
Lift Kits
This should be no surprise. Many new SUV owners go right to this aftermarket mod as soon as they get their new cars home; even if their plans don’t include off roading or are limited to less intense off-road ideas. A lifted SUV or truck just looks cool. It also sends the idea that the car is a cut above and has received special treatment. Even a little bit of a lifted suspension will allow for larger tires, which grabs the attention of the Bronco. In factory form, Broncos tend to draw a crowd but with bigger tires and aftermarket wheels, they’re just downright magnetic. Once you get onto more rugged terrain, the lift kit comes more into play. Broncos feature sized wheel wells that can accommodate big tires, but with wheel clearance, when you encounter a bigger obstacle, those types of tires could run out of room. Also, an increased height improves a vehicle’s approach angle, which directly enhances overall off-roading.
Winches
When you are in a difficult off-roading situation, a winch becomes essential. While cheaper and more easily accessible snatch straps could work too (as long as another car is there to help) they have limitations. If you find yourself in a steep embankment, there may not be enough to position another vehicle to help you. By contrast, bumper-mounted winches with 100 feet of cable are common and that extra range can make a world of difference in many off roading situations. Once the pulling gets underway, winches present another advantage. While straps are dependent on the skill level of the other off roaders, a winch takes a lot of the human element out of the equation. A high-quality aftermarket winch will pull smoot and even. Also, most winches are easy to move from one vehicle to another.
Underside Protection/Skid Plates
Protecting the underside of your Bronco from damage is so important when it comes to off roading. This damage usually comes from abrasion stemming from encounters with obstacles, such as logs, rocks, and other debris. We often think that skid plates prevent damage that might occur if they aren’t there, but the truth of the matter is fallout can be potentially more dangerous. Most vehicles have underside protection of some sort, but special skid plates offer more protection.
